603 - Last Rights (83)
Michael and Jesse were awaiting their appointment with Pearce and soon discovered the reason for the clandestine meeting. Without any small talk she played them an answering machine message from Anson who "wanted to be friends" by giving her the name of the guy who had killed her fiancé, Jansen (Jay) Tunberg. Mike immediately knew that it was merely a plan by Anson to get Pearce to ruin her career in the agency by going after the guy, Ahmed Damour; who, by a convoluted method was now selling the CIA the info that had been stolen from Tunberg and therefore under the agencies protection. Mike jumped in rapidly and convinced her to accept their help in getting the information away from Damour which would "deactivate" Damour in a way that would still keep her in the agency and therefore still able to help Fiona (which is what Anson wanted to disrupt.) She agreed, but it was a six man job meaning that they needed to "recruit" both Madeline and Nate. The information was on a hard drive that Damour had hidden somewhere; and they discovered that he was soon taking a cruise where they could isolate him and reel him into an elaborate con. Sam suggested they make him think his life was in jeopardy so he would reveal the drive's location by contacting his son. While Michael was aboard ship playing an infectious disease doctor from the CDC, Sam was to monitor contacts with – and later extract – the son: Sharif. He told Mike: "nothing against the Westen clan, but I'm going to be real glad when we get Fi out of the clink." Just like Sam feared, Madeline whined, badgered and threatened before agreeing to help but Nate seemed glad to help without discussion.
At the dock, Sam and his "troops" tailed Sharif while Mike memorized some "medical talk." Jesse rolled dice next to Damour and "accidentally" drank his drink which required that he buy him another. Pearce slipped some "Prazosin" into the new drink while Jesse distracted the body-guard; and, within minutes, Damour was doubled over in agony, sweating and passing out. Doctor Winnick, in the infirmary, was puzzled about the diagnosis and even more so when Jesse was brought in with the same symptoms, having taken the same Prazosin himself. Two patients, who had drunk out of the same glass, made it easier for Mike to worm his way into being trusted to care for the "contagious" ones as: "Dr. George Penderson." His first action was to pronounce this as "a highly contagious and very deadly strain of meningitis" which conveniently gave them rationale to exclude the body-guard for "testing" as well as sending in a "team" to examine Sharif and the house back home. Madeline pretended to be a nurse and examine Sharif while Sam and Nate went through the house with swabs. They got rid of the security guard long enough to plant a bug in the phone of Damour's office; but, Nate didn't do it fast enough and got caught in the act. They had to claim that the phone was full of germs and take it all outside – so, no bug; but Madeline did convince Sharif that he needed to wear a GPS device "for his heart."
With a bug on Sharif, Mike could then give Damour a final "push" by convincing him that the strain of Meningitis he had was man-made and he had been deliberately infected on his phone and toothbrush etc.; as well as the fact that his condition was beyond help. They gave him a satellite phone which was bugged and heard him tell Sharif to "do what they had planned" with the files "in Habibi's place, fourth shelf on the Remline chest." Sam and Nate thought it would be a simple snatch-and-grab after they had tailed his tracker to the hiding place. However, it turned out that Yevgeni and his Russian gang was there to buy the hard-drive. Sam said there was no way to do it now, so called Mike who told him to sit tight. Pearce refused to give up and came up with her own plan telling mike that "I have a play here Westen, back me up or stay out of the way!" They told Damour that the bacteria he had been infected with was made by the Russians – the St. Petersburg Strain. He then called Sharif, told him the information and to kill the Russians – which he did. That cleared the way for Sam to conk him on the head and get the hard-drive. Pearce got to confront Damour about his killing. She told him "we have the information you murdered Jay for, we have your son and we have you. I'm not killing you Ahmed, but believe me your life is over."
Fiona got to meet Warden Mills in her office – and her handcuffs were removed. The warden had heard about her fight and offered to transfer Fiona to "cell block 9," the wing for high-risk offenders, because of her fight with Doneski. All she had to do was sign a request for protective custody; but, she declined to do so (respectfully) because that would prevent her from investigating who was trying to kill her. She did, however, sign the form so that Michael (unexpectedly to the warden) could come visit. In voice-over Michael told us that "hiding was only a temporary measure" and the true solution was to expose yourself to other potential threats as well as potential ally's – specifically AYN (anything you need) who claimed she could "stage a Beatles reunion concert if the price was right." That was a problem for Fiona because currency was canteen credits and she didn't have any. The only solution was "favor for a favor" which Fiona advised "try me." Ayn said she would get what Fiona needed if she would jam a door for two minutes at a particular time; so, Fiona gave her a shopping list of needed supplies. Ayn said "I just may decide to like you criminal." Ayn brought her a "six pack, three cans of tuna, plaster, nail file and your damn sparkler." From that she made aluminum shavings, mixed them with plaster and sparkler shavings in a tuna can and made a "sparkling something" which seemed to melt a lock long enough for Ayn's goons to "deal with" another inmate who was trying to break into her business.
True to her promise, Ayn told Fiona that whoever was trying to kill her was "working with a dirty ass guard." When she started to say "before I provide that information" Fiona grabbed her by the neck against the wall saying she wasn't going to play ANY games. Ayn said she was not going to let anyone broadcast the name over the visiting room phone and that Fiona should write down what she "wants your boyfriend to know and I'll make sure it gets delivered." Through the thick visiting-room glass Michael told Fiona that he was going to get her out but she said that she didn't want to talk about that for lack of time. She said "now you know why I never wear orange." He reminisced about the "little dingy bar in Belfast – the Black Sand Pub – where we first met." "I made the mistake of asking," he said breaking into his Irish accent, "would you like to dance… and you pulled a snub nosed revolver on me." With tears in her eyes Fiona responded: "That I did… and you said…". Mike broke in: "I assume that means yes." After Michael picked up his belongings on the way out, an inmate told him that he had dropped a piece of paper on the floor. When he said the he hadn't, she said "yes, you did!" He picked up the note from Fiona which said: "Michael, someone is trying to have me killed in here. On the back of this note you'll find the name and address of guard who's working with them. Do what you can. Please hurry. C.O. Matt Sturges, 935 Plantation Drive."
